Finding the proper business partner is a big part of starting your own company. You certainly don’t have to work with someone else, but if you do, your company‘s success is largely tied to how well this partnership works.

Seeing how important it is to find the right person, here are a few things you may want to consider.

They should have complementary skills

First of all, think about the skills or abilities that you don’t possess. You want to find someone who has those abilities and gives your company an entirely different skillset. It can also help to look for someone who may be lacking the skills that you have so that the two of you can work together well.

You should be able to get along

At the same time, you want don’t want to be too drastically different. It’s important for you and your business partner to be able to get along and enjoy working with each other on a daily basis. Some suggest considering if you could take a road trip or a vacation with that person. If you couldn’t, they may not be the right one.

They should have the same focus

Finally, you and your new business partner need to have the same focus, the same goals and the same vision for the company. Now, you can have different ideas or areas where you need to compromise, but it’s problematic when you both have a very different vision. You end up working against each other rather than with each other.

After you find the right business partner, take the time to consider the documents you’ll need and the legal steps that will be necessary.
